Terms of Service
Effective October 5, 2026
These terms cover the Encodia app for Mac, the Encodia Pro upgrade, and the encodia.app website. They're written to be read. Please do.
About these terms
Encodia is made by Amit Raj, an independent developer ("we", "us"). By downloading, installing or using Encodia, you ("you") agree to these terms.
Encodia is distributed through Apple's Mac App Store, so your use of it is also governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Apple EULA") and the Apple Media Services Terms. These terms add to the Apple EULA. If the two conflict on the licence to use the app, the Apple EULA wins.
If you don't agree to these terms, don't use Encodia, and delete it from your Mac.
Your licence to use Encodia
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Encodia on any Mac you own or control, as the App Store's usage rules allow. You may use Encodia for personal and commercial work, such as converting videos for your business, your clients or your website.
You may not sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute Encodia itself, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows you to, including as the LGPL allows for the FFmpeg component (see Open-source software).
Encodia is licensed to you, not sold. We keep all rights we don't expressly give you here.
Encodia Pro
Encodia is free to download. Encodia Pro is an optional, one-time in-app purchase that unlocks extra features, listed on the Pro section of our home page and in the app.
- One purchase, no subscription. You pay once. There are no recurring charges.
- Sold by Apple. Apple handles the payment, taxes, receipts and refunds. The price you pay is the one the App Store shows you when you buy.
- Launch pricing. Pro may be offered at a launch or promotional price for a limited time. A price change, up or down, doesn't affect what you've already paid, and we don't give partial refunds or credits for later price changes.
- Restoring. Pro is tied to your Apple Account. Use Restore Purchases in the app to unlock it on your other Macs, or after reinstalling.
- Refunds. Refunds are decided by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple refunds a purchase, Pro is locked again.
- Lasting access. Pro features you've bought stay unlocked in that version of Encodia and in later versions, for as long as we offer Encodia. We may add features to Pro; we won't take away core Pro features you've paid for and charge for them again.
Your content
Your videos, images, intros and other files ("your content") stay yours. We don't receive them and claim no rights to them.
You're responsible for your content. You confirm you have the rights you need to convert, change, brand and publish it, including any music, footage, logos or watermarks you add, and that doing so doesn't break the law or anyone else's rights.
Converting video changes it: it's re-encoded, and some quality is always lost. Keep your originals. Encodia doesn't change or delete your source videos, but you're responsible for backing up anything you can't afford to lose.
Your servers and uploads
Encodia can upload converted videos to FTP, FTPS or SFTP servers you set up. You're responsible for:
- having permission to use those servers and to upload to them;
- keeping your login details safe, and choosing an encrypted protocol (FTPS or SFTP) when that matters to you;
- what you upload, and any costs, limits or rules of your hosting provider.
We don't operate these servers and aren't responsible for their availability, security or contents. Uploads can overwrite files with the same name in the destination folder; check your settings before you start.
Acceptable use
Don't use Encodia to:
- convert, distribute or upload content you don't have the rights to, or that infringes copyright, trademarks or other rights;
- remove, bypass or defeat copy protection or other technical measures;
- create or spread content that's illegal, including content that exploits or harms children;
- access servers or accounts you aren't authorised to use.
Open-source software
Encodia includes open-source software, each under its own licence. Most importantly, Encodia includes FFmpeg as a separate, unmodified program, licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licences.
The full list, the licence texts, and the complete source code for the exact version of FFmpeg we ship are on our Open Source page, and in Encodia under Preferences → About → Acknowledgements.
Encodia's name and design
"Encodia", the Encodia icon, and the app's design are ours. These terms don't give you the right to use them, apart from referring to Encodia by name. Apple, Mac, macOS and App Store are trademarks of Apple Inc. Encodia isn't made or endorsed by Apple or by the FFmpeg project.
Updates and changes
We may release updates that fix problems, change features or add new ones. Updates come through the Mac App Store. Some updates may need a newer version of macOS. We aim to keep Encodia working, but we can't promise it will run on every future version of macOS, or that we'll offer it forever.
Privacy
Encodia works on your Mac and collects no personal data. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly what it stores and where.
No warranty
We work hard to make Encodia reliable, but software has bugs, and video files vary endlessly. To the fullest extent the law allows, Encodia is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't promise that Encodia will be error-free, that every video will convert, or that converted files will meet any particular standard.
Some places don't allow these exclusions. Where that's the case, they apply only as far as the law allows, and your statutory consumer rights aren't affected.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, files, profits, revenue or business, arising from your use of Encodia or this website, even if we were told they were possible.
Our total liability for any claim about Encodia is limited to the amount you paid for Encodia Pro, or US $10 if you haven't bought it.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Ending these terms
You can stop using Encodia at any time by deleting it. If you seriously break these terms, your licence ends automatically, and you must stop using Encodia. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as Your content, No warranty and Limitation of liability, continue after that.
This website
You're welcome to read, link to and share encodia.app. Don't attack, overload or scrape it in a way that harms it, and don't present its content as your own. We try to keep it accurate; if anything here differs from what the App Store shows at the time you buy, the App Store is right.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when Encodia gains new features or the law changes. We'll post the new version here and change the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll also say so in the app's release notes. If you keep using Encodia after a change, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, stop using it.
